How To Take Lariam

Lariam is used for both malaria prevention and treatment, but is prescribed here for the purposes of prevention.

The usual course of treatment for preventing the contraction of malaria is a single 250mg tablet to be taken once a week, with food, at approximately the same time of day each time.

First, you should begin taking Lariam 3 weeks before you plan to enter the part of the world with a high malaria risk factor. This allows the medicine to reach optimum levels in your body. Then, after your arrival, continue to take the tablet once a week for the duration of your trip.

Upon your exit from the area, continue to take the tablet for 4 further weeks. The parasite may have entered the bloodstream, not caused symptoms, but not be completely defeated.
